Moving To Key West

Of course, assuming you don't already live in Key West, getting there can seem a little daunting. As with any other move, you need to factor in the typical costs of moving, housing and possibly a new career. But moving to Key West really isn't that hard. Living there with an unexpected increase in the cost of living can be a real challenge.

Florida Keys Road Trip: 25 Awesome Things To Do Between Key Largo And Key West

Unlike any other city in the US, the mention of Key West brings to mind a lazy, carefree life.

Relaxing by the ocean or hitting the bars on Duval Street or visiting The Green Parrot is an everyday experience for anyone who wants to experience it, right? All of a sudden, you start thinking about selling your house in Massachusetts, quitting your job, packing everything into a U Haul, and going on a road trip.

Slowly! In fact, the streets of Key West are not paved with gold. Even if route 1 takes you directly to the island, you still live on the island. This means that everything will be more expensive. There is much more gas, food and shelter here than on the mainland. Since Key West is a 3-hour drive from Miami, the cost of shipping goods and supplies to the island will hit your wallet a little harder. Living in Key West is also highly desirable as it increases costs due to the basic economics of supply and demand. All of these should be taken into consideration before you move to Key West.

If you plan it, there will be no surprises. If it's worth visiting Smathers Beach, snorkeling, people-watching, biking, boating, and kayaking (to name a few) when you're not working, then the decision is easy. Move to Key West and be the envy of your friends. Be smart and live the island and beach life that many of us want to be a part of. Some worry that the monorail could spoil the scenic view of the overseas highway. The Monroe County Commission asked the state to consider the character and scenic nature of the Keys.

It's been 80 years since you could travel the Florida Keys by train. But Monroe County wants to consider bringing it back as a monorail or light rail system.

The Monroe County Commission on Tuesday approved a resolution asking the state Department of Transportation to conduct a feasibility study on the project.

The regional advisory committee for climate change came up with the idea. Part of this committee's mission is to find ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote public transportation.

"We have two entrances and exits. Traffic is getting worse and worse. Accidents happen almost every week, often with fatal consequences,” said Monroe County Mayor Heather Carruthers. "We have to find a more sustainable way around it."

Commissioner Danny Colehage, the only Keys native on the commission, voted in favor of the motion — but only after wording was added that the study include effects on the character of the islands and its potential impact on a scenic corridor along the chain of islands.

This isn't the first time a monorail has been proposed for the Keys. That 1970 proposal called for a railroad that would run from the Miami airport directly to Key West, bypassing most of the Keys and passing through the Everglades and Florida Bay.

"I have a vision of thousands of concrete columns supporting a monorail from one end of the Keys to the other," Kohlhage said. "I just can't even think about it."

Overseas Highway, such as the U.S. 1 known in the Keys, designated a scenic highway by the state and federal governments. Many of the bridges, originally built for Henry Flagler's Key West extension of his Florida East Coast Railroad, are now included in the state park's Overseas Heritage Trail.

"To be honest, seeing power lines when we're driving down the road isn't very nice either," she said. "I think there is a way to maintain our character and also improve our resilience."

This isn't the first time a monorail has been proposed for the Keys. In 1970, one inventor drew up a detailed design for a railroad that would run directly from Key West to Miami International Airport, crossing Florida Bay and the Everglades instead of following a winding freeway route.

"I don't think anyone took it seriously," said Tom Hambright, a historian at the Monroe County Public Library. "He was one of those people who was an inventor who had all kinds of ideas."

Miami To Key West Drive: Florida Keys Stops, Stays + Map!

A laid-back, alternative, energetic retired couple from Toledo is considering a full-time move to Key West. Retired teacher, business owner and former guesthouse owner with many skills. We have a normal monthly income, but we like to work and are busy. We would be interested in working part time and doing whatever we can to improve the cost of living in Key West. We do not want to buy housing and prefer to rent. Any suggestions??

I don't know much about Key West. Last month we had a nice couple of days there as tourists. But we found that real estate is incredibly expensive. He took this photo of a "top fixer" about 3 blocks from Duval Street. (assuming the download works). If you zoom in, you'll see the advertised price on the tag is $3.79 million!

With real estate costs like this, I can't imagine where people who work in shops and services can afford to live (rent or buy).

Good luck, I don't have any information for you, but it will be a lot, I just think it's great that you're from Toledo, we're close to Brian, I don't know if you've heard or not, but it's about an hour away. Oh, and we are also looking to move to Florida, but on the Gulf Coast.

Meeting Venues In Key West

Haha there is a lot of land attached to this abandoned place, a lot for Old Town Key West anyway, I think around two acres if so. Although no one pays that much. The values are slowly falling from what they were a few years ago, but stubbornly and are still very high.

As for how "service workers" can afford to live here, they work multiple jobs to afford to pay the rent for an apartment they can share with three or more roommates. You can't live like this for long and it borders on exploitation. Many of them are foreign nationals who prefer to do this and then return to their homeland.

There has been some discussion about how the Keys will keep local people working in these industries, but rent control projects are very limited and seem to be in stop mode most of the time.
